Declaration of Dependence

Yesterday our nation celebrated our independence from an oppressive regime that has since become a close ally. Each year we are reminded of the amazing sacrifices that our forefathers made on our behalf, so that we may enjoy the freedoms that so many of us take for granted now.

John Adams spoke these words on July 1, 1776, “Before God, I believe the hour has come. My judgment approves this measure, and my whole heart is in it. All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope in this life, I am now ready here to stake upon it. And I leave off as I began, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration.” The Declaration that he was so unquestionably ready to die for, was that which proclaimed our freedom from England.

These words remind me that though we declared our independence from one sovereign, we must daily declare our dependence upon another Sovereign. It is our dependence upon the King of Kings that has blessed our nation and allowed us the opportunity to preserve our freedom and that of others. Not everyone agrees with that, but it is not uniformity that we seek – it is unity.

Though it seems at times that we, as Americans, are not unified on many issues; it is my hope that we can become unified behind the idea that our country is a source of great good in this world. May our nation be united in a declaration of dependence upon the one that is the source of that great good in the United States – our Sovereign Lord, Jesus Christ.
